Chelsea vs Arsenal: Enzo Maresca must come up with answers to key questions to pass toughest test

Chelsea can close Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table when they meet at Stamford Bridge – but Blues boss Enzo Maresca has key calls to make for derby showdown; Watch Chelsea vs Arsenal live on Sky Sports Premier League from 4pm on Sunday; kick-off 4.30pm Chelsea host Arsenal on Sunday, live on Sky Sports, as the Gunners’ nearest challengers in the early Premier League standings. This will be the Blues’ toughest examination yet – and there are intriguing questions for head coach Enzo Maresca to answer… How do you break down the Premier League’s best defence? Chelsea have scored 41 goals in 19 games this term – only Arsenal can better that total across all competitions among Premier League teams. Yet, how Maresca sets up his attack this weekend and who he selects to start feels like a crucial call, given the Gunners’ extraordinary defensive quality. Cole Palmer should be back available. But can he really be deployed from the start after only just returning from the groin injury – and subsequent broken toe – which has disrupted the start to his season? That could mean Joao Pedro is again No 10 but the frontline striker ahead of him has been an issue, with just one goal coming from Chelsea’s starting No 9 in the league this season – whether that is Liam Delap, Marc Guiu or Joao Pedro. Maresca used Pedro Neto as a false nine to good effect against Barcelona on Tuesday, although Delap’s first Champions League goal off the bench could give him the boost he needs before leading the line against Arsenal. The other attacking decision which will be on the minds of Chelsea supporters is whether Estevao starts.

Chelsea told Enzo Fernandez to help them sign world-class player

Chelsea’s transfer policy under the new ownership has drawn a lot of criticism over the years. For understandable reasons as well. The club have spent north of a billion pounds on signing new players but they do not even seem to be a team that is locked-on to qualify for the Champions League, like Arsenal or Manchester City. If you spend that kind of money, you need to compete for the Premier League as well as the Champions League. Chelsea have not done that. It is not as easy to pull off as many might believe though. Just look at Liverpool this season Liverpool spent north of £400 million in the summer transfer window to sign players like Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and more. Most viewed this as the start of an era of dominance for the Reds. Instead, they are struggling right now and are another team that might miss out on a Champions League spot if they do not improve quickly. Even worse is that they are the Premier League holders. So, after spending so much, they have declined drastically. Coming back to Chelsea, there are some big-money signings that have worked out for them and could form the base of a successful team in the future. Moises Caicedo falls in that category for sure. MOISES CACEIDO WINS CHELSEA PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Moises Caicedo has completed a clean sweep of our October awards by being chosen as your Chelsea Player of the Month. Another incredible string of performances by Caicedo has seen the Blues supporters vote him as the club’s player of the month for the second time in a row – it means he is both our Player of the Month and the scorer of our Goal of the Month for October. In September, Moises topped the poll on the Chelsea Official App with 60 per cent of the votes cast by fans. This time around, it was slightly closer, as he took 56 per cent of the votes. However, he still enjoyed a clear margin of victory over second-placed Estevao Willian, who received 35 per cent of the votes. Video Caicedo wins GOTM! 🏆 Moises Caicedo wins October men’s goal of the month for his Premier League strike against Liverpool… It is hard to argue with that verdict. Caicedo featured in all five of our matches across all competitions during October and scored two goals: a stunning opener as we began the month with a 2-1 win over Premier League champions Liverpool and the second of a 5-1 thrashing of Ajax in the Champions League. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was certainly impressed: ‘He’s an actual animal! He’s the best player playing in his position anywhere. Who’s better than him in that position? ‘He’s a beast. Every challenge, every 50-50, he wins it. His composure on the ball, his finishing… if he strikes it on target it goes in!’ Congratulations again, Moi!

John Terry singles out Chelsea star for praise after Wolves win: ‘Absolutely petrifying’

Former Chelsea captain John Terry hailed the performance of Alejandro Garnacho following Saturday’s 3-0 Premier League victory over Wolves. Following a midweek Champions League setback, Enzo Maresca was desperate to get back to winning ways ahead of the international break. After a goalless first half, the Stamford Bridge faithful could have been forgiven for thinking they were in for another frustrating afternoon against a side they were heavily fancied to beat comfortably. Malo Gusto’s first goal for the club early in the second period broke the deadlock and from then on the result was never in question.

Chelsea find their next Drogba

Like Drogba, who made his professional breakthrough at Rennes’ Breton rivals Guingamp and went on to attain legend status at Stamford Bridge by scoring 164 goals in all competitions, Meite possesses an excellent nose for goal, is formidable in his physique and boasts great aerial ability. Chelsea, who will sign Strasbourg’s Emanuel Emegha next summer, see him as a centre-forward for the future, offering a similar type of target as Liam Delap, as well as a player who is still raw enough to be moulded into exactly the style Enzo Maresca wants.

Lionel Messi delivers goal, assist as Miami beats Seattle

Lionel Messi had a goal and an assist as Inter Miami CF beat Seattle Sounders 3-1 on Tuesday night just over two weeks after losing to the Sounders in the Leagues Cup final. The Sounders beat Inter Miami 3-0 in the Leagues Cup on Aug. 31, but Messi assisted a wide open Jordi Alba with an outside-of-the-foot pass in the 12th minute to give the Herons early command. Messi nearly doubled the score in the 28th minute when he received a ball over the top and once again tried to execute using the outside of his left foot, but the shot hit off the post. Alba returned the favor in the 41st minute, assisting a darting Messi who got just enough of a touch to make it 2-0. Ian Fray headed home Rodrigo De Paul’s corner in the opening minutes of the second half to extended the Herons’ lead to 3-0. “I’m always looking for him (Messi), he’s always looking for me. We’ve created a lot of goals and we hope it’s like that until the end of our careers,” Alba said. Obed Vargas found the back of the net for Seattle’s goal in the 69th minute, as the Mexican international scored on his country’s independence day. Miami coach Javier Mascherano said the win helped take the sting out the Leagues Cup loss. “It’s clearly an important and necessary victory, because the other day we came from losing a match that, in my opinion, we didn’t deserve such a heavy result, and we’d done some good things, especially in the first half,” Mascherano said after the game. “Well, it was important, beyond giving it our all after that defeat, to try to get back into a good mood, to find a winning streak, against a great rival who took away our chance of winning a competition a couple of weeks ago.” He also said he tried to reframe the two-match slide. “Well, the streak. I understand that we’ve lost two games in a row, and sometimes it feels like a disaster, and you see all the bad things, and it seems like everything needs to be changed,” he said. “I understand that. I think on the one hand it’s good because it raises expectations for us and because it encourages us to be competitive, to always be on our guard, to never relax. But, well, we can’t go crazy either. “Today we won one, we have seven more to go, as I said before. We have seven finals left; our goal is to win all seven to finish first in our conference. That’s the goal, and well, we’ll take it game by game knowing that it’s three points more and one game less.” Inter Miami was again without Luis Suárez who served the second game of his three-match MLS ban for spitting on a member of the Sounders’ coaching staff in the Leagues Cup Final. Mascherano said that he has been doing a lot of juggling to determine when to play which players. “Nowadays, with the players we have out, putting on playoff mode, if you’re talking about a way to refresh players, we don’t have that,” he said. “Today we had 17 players, including a goalkeeper. Whereas today, if I want to put [Daniel] Pinter on, I can’t use him in the next game, since a second-team player can only play two games. “Even strategically, we have to think about that. It’s what we have to do; we’ve hit a streak between suspensions and injuries. We have five or six players out. Important games, and well, we’ll see how they recover. As of today, we’ll make do with what we have and welcome whoever recovers. “During the FIFA window we’ll probably lose five or six players. So, I don’t think we’re in a position to consider that, but obviously it’s worrying. We are concerned and well, we will try to handle it in the best possible way.” Messi had a chance to complete a brace in the 76th minute, but was denied by Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei. New Inter Miami signing Mateo Silvetti made his debut after arriving from Messi’s boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina. MLS action continues for both teams when Inter Miami hosts D.C. United on Saturday, while the Sounders travel to face Austin FC on Sunday.
